Ulster County Historian Eddie Moran on Entries of Note in the Account Book of Louis Bevier Jr. Beginning in 1742, Louis Bevier Jr (1717-1772) of the Bevier House in Marbletown recorded his financial transactions in two account books which survive in the collections of Historic Huguenot Street in New Paltz. Besides providing a detailed window into the culture and economy of an Ulster County town in the mid 18th century, the account books of Louis Bevier Jr also contain numerous entries regarding the experiences and activity of marginalized peoples of the Hudson Valley, including African people held in bondage and Native people residing in the area. In this presentation, Ulster County Historian Eddie Moran will discuss several entries from the account books of Louis Bevier Jr, including an entry for the labor of an enslaved man named Sambo in constructing a Reformed Church in Marbletown, an entry recording the sale of cider to a Native woman named Janitie, and the employment of Native individuals in processing flax on Louis Bevier's farm.

Edward Moran III currently serves as the appointed Historian for the County of Ulster. Mr. Moran is a 2020 graduate of SUNY New Paltz with a BA in History. He was previously employed at Historic Huguenot Street where he served first as a tour guide starting in 2017 before transitioning to the role of Tour and Interpretation Manager in 2022. He is a lifelong resident of the Wallkill Valley, and a descendant of the region's Huguenot and Dutch colonizers.

The DePuy Lecture Series 2025 is made possible by the M&T Bank Foundation.
